As of 2017 there are 43 country borders across the World that are separated by physical barriers. Of these, 29 were constructed after 2000. In 2015 and 2016, 15 new barriers were proposed or started construction.
This piece looks at residential locations where physical borders are an everyday reality; sharing the same skies but experience a separation at ground level. Projected into the space between the walls are real-time digital visualisations of the skies above Macedonia and Greece—the latest location to build a physical border barrier. The sky represents the constant presence of the other side. Curated tweets, by border residents, present a window into how barriers impact those that live beside them.
